After the last train, a massage in Amsterdam rather than a platform

It happens in a particular order. Dinner ran long, or the last round did. The station board says the next departure is in five hours. Somebody finds a room, or you already had one and simply cannot get out to it. By the time all of that resolves it is past one, everything that serves food has closed, and you are in a building you have never been in before with nothing planned and no reason to sleep yet. That is the hour these bookings come from, and the tone of the messages is always the same: not desperate, just suddenly holding more night than expected.

Almost nothing is arrangeable at half past one. Kitchens are shut, the trains are done, and anything requiring an appointment requires an appointment the day before. This is the exception. The booking runs in writing, it takes the address, the hour and the length, and it comes back with a name, a figure and an arrival window of forty to sixty minutes anywhere in central Amsterdam. Nothing about the request is unusual at that hour, and the message does not need a preamble explaining how you ended up where you are.

People in this situation often cannot name the street, and it does not matter. A district is enough to start with: Centrum, the Jordaan, De Pijp, Oud-Zuid, near Leidseplein, near Rembrandtplein. The building name and the room number can follow once reception has finished with you. What is worth getting right in the first message is the hour you want, in Amsterdam time, the length, and whether there are two of you. If you are not sure how long to book, say how much of the night is left and a length will be put to you against it.

A stranded night usually has a fixed point at the end of it, which is the first train out. Work backwards from it. If the first departure is at six and it is half past one, an hour is the sensible booking, finishing well before you need to be moving. If the first thing you have to catch is at nine, ninety minutes or two hours both fit comfortably. Do not book to fill the time; book to leave yourself the last stretch of it. A session that ends in a run for a platform has undone its own work.

The room is whatever the night handed you, so pick a format that does not care. Warm oil and sensual work need a bed and nothing else, which makes them the right answer in a small room with a bathroom you would rather not investigate. Body to body works for the same reason: full contact, no gel, nothing to rinse afterwards. Leave nuru and soapy for a night when you know the bathroom. If there are two of you in the room, say so in the first line, because a couple with one therapist pays double the single hour and a therapist each pays double that again.

Buildings in the centre lock the street door overnight and leave one person on the desk. A visitor at two is routine for that person, and the arrival looks like exactly what it is: somebody coming to see a guest. If the lift needs a card, or the porter expects visitors to be met in the lobby, that is a line in the message rather than a problem at the door. Sometimes the booking gets written before the room exists. Somebody is still at the station, still deciding whether to find somewhere or wait out the night on a bench, and the message arrives half formed. That is early rather than wrong, but nothing can be arranged against an address that does not exist yet. Find the room first, then write with the district and the hour, and the arrival window starts from the moment the booking is agreed rather than from the moment you started looking. The one thing that cannot be arranged, at any hour, is a session anywhere other than a room you have booked or live in. Not a station, not a lobby, not a shared space, and nothing outside Amsterdam.

Missed trains rarely strand one person. If there are two of you in the room, say so in the first message, because both people have to be twenty-one or over and both have to have agreed to the booking, and she satisfies herself about that at the door rather than taking it from the thread. The arrangement is either one therapist between you or a therapist each, the second costing twice the first hour for hour, and each carrying its own sum for a whole night. On a night that went wrong the first is far more common, and it works well when one of you wants the session and the other mostly wants the night to stop being about the timetable. A missed train does not change the rate, because there is not a separate one to change. The hour, the ninety minutes and the two hours are priced on her profile exactly as on a night with trains.
